Zelenskyy: Ukraine Cannot Rely on a 'Coalition of the Willing' for Wartime Security Guarantees.
Ukrainian President's Statement on Wartime Security
According to Novyny.live: On January 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine cannot depend on a 'Coalition of the Willing' to act as security guarantors while the war is ongoing. He emphasized that support is only possible through bilateral agreements. This stance highlights the critical need for concrete, long-term security commitments from individual nations rather than informal groupings.
Zelenskyy stressed that such a coalition could only function as a security guarantor after the war ends and a ceasefire is in place.
“First of all, regarding the Coalition of the Willing, it will work as security guarantors only after the war ends, only after the ceasefire,” he noted.Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has discussed security guarantees with members of the Coalition.
Escalating Threat from Russia
Furthermore, Zelenskyy highlighted an escalation in the threat from Russia. He reported that Russia plans to launch up to a thousand drones in a single wave, whereas the current average number of drones launched daily is between 200 and 250.
“Now, regarding a thousand drones a day, that is what the enemy wants,” the president added. In response to these challenges, Ukraine is producing a thousand interceptors per day as part of its strategy to counter the aggression.
Zelenskyy also noted that the enemy's current capabilities amount to about 350 drones.
“I see for now an average of about 350 of their capabilities,” he said. This challenge is known to both Syrskyi and the new head of the Ministry of Defense, Fedorov. In early January 2023, the first step was taken toward legally binding security guarantees for Ukraine, marking a crucial stage in the search for support for the country.
President Zelenskyy's statement underscores the urgency and complexity of Ukraine's security situation amid the ongoing war. The lack of robust guarantees from international partners could impact Ukraine's defense strategy and its ability to withstand aggression. Simultaneously, the ramp-up in interceptor production demonstrates Ukraine's intent to bolster its own military capabilities in the face of growing threats from Russia.
