Ukraine Offers to Share Defense Technology with Japan, Zelenskyy Says.
Deepening Ukraine-Japan Relations
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined the potential for a significant expansion of ties with Japan, specifically in the realm of defense cooperation and technology exchange. In an interview with Kyodo News, he emphasized the importance of the bilateral relationship and Ukraine's readiness to collaborate. This outreach comes as Ukraine seeks to build a broad coalition of international support against ongoing aggression.
Zelenskyy pointed out that Japan possesses licenses for, or its own production of, missiles and air defense systems. This capability opens new avenues for practical security cooperation between the two nations.
"I am ready to meet in any format, on any platform, or during any major meetings or summits. However, I believe it would be more useful to meet directly and focus on our bilateral relations," Zelenskyy stated.
He further stressed Ukraine's interest in partnering with Japan, including through joint production and knowledge sharing.
"And of course, we want to cooperate, to have joint production or exchange knowledge. We are ready to open our technologies," the Ukrainian President added.
Potential Areas for Cooperation
Zelenskyy highlighted several specific fields that could benefit both countries:
- Cybersecurity
- Interceptor drones
- Energy and critical infrastructure management during crises
- Modern warfare
These innovations could form the foundation for future collaboration, strengthening bilateral ties and fostering technological exchange.
On February 19, Zelenskyy announced the creation of a coordination center, a step that could prove crucial in enhancing defense partnerships with other countries, including Japan. Alongside First Lady Olena Zelenska, he also honored the memory of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, underscoring the importance of Ukraine's fight for freedom and independence.
President Zelenskyy's remarks on expanding cooperation with Japan highlight Ukraine's strategy of developing international security and technology relationships. In the face of global challenges, including threats from aggressive states, such partnerships could be decisive for strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities. Support from Japan, a nation with advanced technological infrastructure, could aid in implementing innovations in key areas like cybersecurity and energy security.
