Zelenskyy Proposes Ceasefire Conditional on Russian Elections.
Statement from Ukraine's President
According to Novyny.live: During the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared his nation's willingness to declare a ceasefire for Russia, contingent upon elections being held within the Russian Federation. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is prepared to facilitate this process provided its security can be guaranteed.
The President further stated that Ukraine is ready to halt hostilities once elections are conducted in Russia.
“Give us a ceasefire,” he remarked.Additionally, Zelenskyy expressed readiness to grant Russians a truce if they hold elections in their own country:
“We can also give a truce to the Russians if they hold elections in Russia.”This proposal comes as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty against the ongoing Russian invasion, which began in February 2022.
Prospects for a Peaceful Settlement
Ukraine's stance signals a readiness for dialogue under specific conditions, potentially opening new avenues for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
President Zelenskyy's statement at the Munich conference underscores Ukraine's desire for a peaceful end to the war. However, its implementation hinges on Russia's willingness to hold elections—a potentially complex demand given the current political climate. By setting conditions that ensure its national security while demonstrating a diplomatic opening, Ukraine may be laying a foundation for future negotiations with Russia and international partners.
