Zelenskyy Warns of Heavy Casualties in a Purely Military Campaign to Reclaim All Territory.
Zelenskyy on the Complexities of Victory and Territorial Concessions
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has addressed the definition of victory in the war, stating that a solely military effort to reclaim all occupied territory would likely result in massive losses. He described the situation as complex, noting that the question of regaining land is not straightforward. 'It depends on what people mean when they say 'win.' It's hard—if we're talking about territories, first of all. How to get all the land back—today, it's very difficult. And it would mean too many losses of people, of lives,' Zelenskyy said. His comments come amid a challenging phase of the conflict, where Ukraine faces a well-entrenched adversary.
The Human Cost of Potential Territorial Concessions
Zelenskyy also highlighted the potential consequences of ceding territory. He pointed out that approximately 200,000 Ukrainians could fall under occupation in such a scenario. The President stressed that these citizens could face severe repression:
“Who told Russia that these people want to be Russian? If not—they will be killed, sent to the front, or to prison. It was the same in Luhansk, Donetsk, Crimea.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed skepticism that territorial concessions would lead to peace. He asserted that 'territorial concessions in Donbas will not stop the war, because Russia cannot be trusted.' Despite this, the President noted that Ukraine is prepared to freeze the conflict along the current front line, even if this is not an ideal solution.
Thus, the issues of territorial concessions and pathways to peace remain pressing and require further discussion.
President Zelenskyy's position underscores the difficult realities Ukraine faces in the ongoing war. His remarks on the potential fallout from territorial compromises reflect a deep concern for the safety of citizens who could come under the aggressor's control. This discussion indicates that any decision regarding the recovery of territory demands a comprehensive analysis and a measured approach, considering not only military but also profound humanitarian factors.
