An Interview with Volodymyr Zelenskyy

According to TSN.ua: In a recent interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the course of the war, its future prospects, and the intense pressure surrounding the Donbas region. He firmly stated that Ukraine will not be defeated, yet the ultimate question of victory remains unresolved.

“We cannot say we are losing this war. To be honest, we are definitely not losing. The question is whether we will win,”
Zelenskyy remarked.

The Situation in the Donbas

The conflict, which began on February 24, 2022, is the bloodiest war in Europe since World War II. Zelenskyy noted that the situation in the Donbas remains extremely difficult, pointing out that both Americans and Russians have suggested that

“if you want the war to end tomorrow, leave the Donbas.”
He described this as a critical and profoundly costly issue, stating,
“That is precisely the question, but it is a very expensive question.”

On February 17-18, 2023, negotiations in Geneva saw American diplomats propose the creation of a demilitarized zone in the Donbas. While these talks indicate potential pathways for resolving the conflict, Zelenskyy emphasized that a final decision on achieving victory and securing peace is still pending. The ongoing war has forced Ukraine to navigate immense pressure from both its allies and its adversary.

Amid the continuing conflict, Ukraine persists in seeking stability and security for its citizens. The situation in the Donbas and the prospects for a peaceful settlement remain a focal point for the international community. Proposals for a demilitarized zone could represent a significant step toward reducing regional tensions. However, achieving a lasting peace will require Ukraine to maintain dialogue at all levels and pursue compromises that serve the interests of its people.
