Zelenskyy Details Massive Russian Barrage and Urges U.S. for Stronger Sanctions.
Ukrainian President's Key Appeal
According to Novyny.live: On February 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a significant new initiative in the U.S. Congress aimed at strengthening sanctions against Russia. This call for action comes as Ukraine endures relentless attacks on its civilian infrastructure. He detailed a record-breaking assault on Ukraine involving:
- 43 ballistic missiles,
- 28 cruise missiles,
- 450 attack drones.
These strikes were carried out during a severe cold snap, with temperatures in many Ukrainian cities plummeting to -20° Celsius (-4° Fahrenheit).
Russia's Continued Assaults
Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia continues to strike Ukrainian cities despite international partners' calls for restraint. The timing of these attacks appears calculated to maximize suffering and damage.
“While America invests so much time and effort in diplomacy, Russia continues to invest only in its missiles and drones and continues shelling despite requests from our American partners to refrain for a week,” stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Ukrainian President stressed that the Russians deliberately chose the coldest days to attack, aiming to cripple the country's energy infrastructure and inflict maximum hardship on the population.
Zelenskyy added that all Russian targets in Ukraine are exclusively energy facilities, demonstrating that human lives and the diplomatic process have also become targets for the Russians. He called for increased pressure on Russia to end the war it started. In this context, the potential for the U.S. to strengthen sanctions against Russia represents a crucial step in countering the aggression. This ongoing conflict highlights the critical importance of sustained Western military and economic support for Ukraine's defense.
This situation underscores the critical need for international support for Ukraine amid Russia's escalating aggression, particularly in the context of targeted attacks on energy infrastructure. Strengthening sanctions could become a vital tool in deterring further aggression and supporting regional stability. Simultaneously, Ukrainian authorities continue to urge the international community to take active steps to ensure the safety and protection of civilians during the war.
