Zelenskyy: Ukraine Can Hold Elections Only After War Ends and Martial Law Lifts.
President Zelenskyy's Stance on Ukrainian Elections
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that national elections can only take place after the war concludes and martial law is officially lifted. He emphasized that a temporary ceasefire would not be sufficient for voting to proceed; the conflict must be fully resolved first. This position highlights the extraordinary challenges of holding a democratic vote during an active, large-scale invasion.
Current Ukrainian law explicitly prohibits holding elections under martial law, which complicates the electoral process. Despite this, preparatory work on the necessary legal framework is underway, with a draft bill reportedly two-thirds complete.
Discussions on Voting Formats and Zelenskyy's Future Candidacy
Zelenskyy also expressed uncertainty about his own potential candidacy in a future vote, remarking:
“And I am not at all sure that I will run; I will see what Ukrainians want.”
Concurrently, active discussions are taking place within Ukraine about implementing alternative voting methods, such as online voting or voting by mail, which could become crucial elements of a future electoral process.
Therefore, the question of when and how to hold elections in Ukraine remains open, requiring further debate and legislative preparation. It is vital that any elections occur under conditions that ensure their legitimacy and reflect the will of the Ukrainian people. In the context of the ongoing conflict, resolving this issue is critical for the country's future democratic development.
