Hungarian Delegation's Kyiv Visit is Private, Not Official, Says Zelenskyy.
What We Know About the Hungarian Delegation's Ukraine Visit
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the Hungarian delegation currently in Kyiv is on a private trip and does not hold any official status. He added that he has no information regarding the purpose of their visit and confirmed that no official negotiations with the Hungarian delegation are taking place.
'I am not aware,' Zelenskyy remarked when commenting on the situation, adding, 'They characterized it as a private trip.'
The delegation, led by Gábor Czepek, arrived in Kyiv. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also described the visit as a private journey, noting that the Hungarians entered the country as regular tourists under the visa-free regime. No official meetings with the Hungarian delegation are planned.
Context of the Visit
This visit occurs against a backdrop of persistently strained relations between Ukraine and Hungary, a dynamic influenced by Budapest's stance on EU aid and sanctions related to Russia's war. While the delegation's presence has drawn some interest, its significance should not be overstated due to its unofficial nature. The lack of scheduled talks and clarity about the trip's purpose suggests the delegation does not intend to discuss serious political matters. It may, however, indicate that both nations continue to seek avenues for maintaining dialogue, albeit in an informal format.
