Zelenskyy Reveals Ukraine's Air Defense Missile Crisis at Davos, Citing Partner Delays.
Ukraine Faces Critical Air Defense Missile Shortage
According to TSN.ua: During an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed a severe shortage of air defense missiles. He stated that Ukraine's air defense systems were left empty amid escalating Russian attacks, revealing that as of the morning of January 16, the country had no missiles for its air defense due to delays in deliveries from international partners. This admission highlights a precarious moment in Ukraine's defense against relentless Russian air assaults.
Logistical Failures and Funding Issues
Zelenskyy emphasized that during recent Russian strikes, key systems like NASAMS and Patriot stood idle without ammunition. He explained that American PAC-3 missiles arrived only a day after blackouts occurred, a delay that critically hampers the effective defense of Ukrainian airspace. The situation was further complicated by an untimely payment for the PURL program funding tranche.
Zelenskyy noted he discussed funding matters with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He also pointed out that American officials have stated they will only sell weapons to Ukraine, a policy which impacts the supply chain for the necessary missiles.
"I am simply stating what is happening," the President summarized.
The missile shortage underscores the critical nature of sustained international support for Ukraine's war effort. Timely arms deliveries are a cornerstone of the country's defense capability, and any disruption can have immediate and severe consequences for its security. Zelenskyy's Davos remarks made it clear that urgent financing and the provision of modern air defense systems have become more pressing than ever.
