At Davos, Zelenskyy Urges Europe to Halt Russian Oil Tankers.
Zelenskyy's Appeal at the World Economic Forum
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, called for European nations to intercept tankers from Russia's 'shadow fleet' that are delivering oil to the continent. He stressed that the revenue generated from these Russian oil sales is directly funding the war against Ukraine. This appeal comes as Western nations continue to seek more effective ways to enforce existing sanctions and cut off the Kremlin's financial lifelines.
Zelenskyy pointed out that Russian oil is being transported directly along Europe's coastline. He questioned why international leaders, including the U.S. President, have the capability to stop these shadow fleet vessels, while Europe seemingly does not. The Ukrainian President argued that the profits from this oil trade are helping to destabilize Europe and finance Russian aggression.
The Critical Role of Economic Sanctions
Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence that if Vladimir Putin were deprived of this funding, Europe could significantly reduce the risks of wider conflict.
“If Europe has the money, then it can protect its people,” he added. The President also emphasized that these tankers are currently generating revenue for the Kremlin, enabling Russia to continue pursuing its aggressive aims. His remarks highlight the ongoing challenge of closing loopholes in the international sanctions regime, which Russia has exploited through its clandestine maritime operations.
Zelenskyy's Davos appeal underscores the vital importance of robust economic sanctions and restrictions against Russia in the context of the ongoing war. By noting that financing is critical for Russia's war effort, he focused the international community's attention on the need for more decisive action to ensure stability in Europe. Halting the tankers supplying Russian oil could be a crucial step in increasing pressure on the Kremlin and diminishing its military capabilities.
