Ukraine Responds to Middle Eastern Requests for Protection Against Iran, Says Zelenskyy.
Statement from Ukraine’s President
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that his country is actively addressing requests from Middle Eastern nations seeking defense against Iranian strikes. He also disclosed that efforts to persuade Iran to halt its drone supplies to Russia have failed. These remarks came during a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on March 18, 2023. The conference highlighted growing concerns over Iran’s military involvement in the region.
Zelenskyy explained that since the war began, Ukraine has pursued diplomatic channels to influence Iran, but those attempts have yielded no results. Iran continues to deliver drones and train Russian military personnel, despite repeated appeals from Ukraine. Moreover, Iran has granted licenses and assisted in building two factories for the production of 'Shahed' drones. As Zelenskyy emphasized,
“we have no positive relations with Iran, nor could we have any.”
Iran-Russia Military Cooperation
The Ukrainian president also noted that Iran uses 'Shahed' drones equipped with Russian-made components to carry out attacks on Middle Eastern countries. This information points to a deepening military partnership between Iran and Russia, which is raising alarms in Ukraine and across the international community.
Zelenskyy’s statements underscore the intricate geopolitical dynamics in the region, where the alliance between Russia and Iran could have far-reaching consequences not only for Ukraine but for other nations as well. This situation is troubling for Ukraine’s international partners, who may need to reassess their security strategies in light of the threats emerging from Iran and its military collaboration with Russia.
