Zelensky pointed to Poland's unpleasant refusal despite the agreement with NATO.
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukraine had reached an agreement with NATO to support Poland in defending its airspace if Poland agrees to shoot down Russian missiles over western Ukraine. However, there are other reasons why this will not happen.
Zelensky stated this at a press conference in Zakarpattia, as reported by "Khvylia".
The President noted that Ukraine has good neighborly relations with Poland, but there are various challenges that require joint actions. In particular, Ukraine periodically requests Poland to shoot down missiles targeted at its territory. Gas storage facilities are located in Stryi, on which the country's energy supply and the population's livelihood depend.
Zelensky mentioned that after the attack on the gas storage facility in Stryi, Ukraine held negotiations with Poland regarding the possibility of shooting down enemy missiles and drones with the help of Polish aviation. Warsaw initially approved this decision on the condition of NATO patrolling Poland's airspace, similar to the Baltic region.
"Are the Poles shooting down these missiles? No. The Poles said they are ready to shoot them down if NATO supports them," - Zelensky explained.
However, according to the president, the Polish authorities refused assistance after initially agreeing with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Other neighbors of Ukraine also did not support this decision.
"We wanted to receive MiGs from Poland, but they couldn't be provided as they were lacking themselves," - Zelensky explained. "So we agreed with NATO that it would allocate a police mission, as in the Baltic region. However, did Poland provide us with aircraft? No."
Zelensky added that even when other countries didn't support the missile interception, Ukraine requested MiGs for the defense of its territories. However, this did not happen.
Recall that earlier, Zelensky reacted to the leak of Ukraine's secret requests to the White House.
