Zelenskyy Honors Fallen Defenders of Moshchun: The Heavy Toll of Kyiv's Defense.
Remembering the Heroes Who Died Defending Moshchun
According to Novyny.live: On March 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during the battle for the village of Moshchun in the Kyiv region. This small settlement became a critical defensive line for the capital. On March 21, 2022, Ukrainian forces managed to completely push Russian troops out of the area, thwarting an enemy attempt to reach Kyiv via the Hostomel–Bucha–Irpin corridor.
In his remarks, President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of honoring those who gave their lives to protect Moshchun, the broader Kyiv region, and the entire country. He also expressed gratitude to the families of the fallen:
'It is deeply important and right to honor the memory of the heroes who defended Moshchun, Kyiv region, and our entire nation. We are grateful to your families and loved ones. It is heartbreaking that they are no longer with us. They live on in our lives and our history. Thank you for defending Ukraine—even at such a tremendous cost.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
On the same day, March 21, 2023, President Zelenskyy and the First Lady attended a farewell ceremony for Patriarch Filaret in Kyiv, which had begun on March 20 at St. Michael's Cathedral. These events underscore the importance of remembering the heroism of Ukraine's defenders who continue to fight for the nation's independence.
Commemorating fallen soldiers—especially in the context of the battle for Moshchun—serves as a vital element of Ukraine's national consciousness and unity. These moments remind the country of the high price paid for its sovereignty and help build a collective memory essential for the future. Honoring such sacrifices also highlights the need to support the families of the deceased, who remain a crucial part of a society enduring war.
