Geneva Talks End Without Agreement on Humanitarian Issues.
Geneva Negotiations: Outcomes and Key Participants
According to UATV: On February 19, talks were held in Geneva between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States. Sources indicate that while some progress was made on military matters, the discussions failed to yield any agreements on the humanitarian component. Overall, the meeting's minimum objectives were not met. These talks are part of a long-standing diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by Rustem Umerov, with David Arakhamia among the participants. The Russian delegation was headed by Vladimir Medinsky. A primary topic was the humanitarian aspect, specifically the exchange of prisoners of war. Four security advisors also attended the meeting: three from European countries and one from the United Kingdom.
Expert Commentary on the Negotiations
Commenting on the results, Ihor Chalenko noted:
“The specific minimum plan was not fulfilled.”
He also emphasized that
“The Russian Federation is in fact refusing to meet with Zelenskyy,”
which highlights the complexity of the situation. According to him, “The core of these meetings was the military theme,” indicating that security issues dominated the agenda.
Consequently, despite some achievements in the military sphere, humanitarian questions remain unresolved, complicating the future course of the negotiation process. The continuation of dialogue, despite these difficulties, may be crucial for future efforts to resolve humanitarian crises and achieve regional stability.
