Winter will take revenge: forecasters revealed where to expect severe frosts and snowfalls.
Ukrainians expect cold weather in January
According to TELEGRAF, Ukrainians expect cold weather in January 2025. This month is considered the coldest in Ukraine, with the lowest average temperature of the year, as well as strong snowstorms and other winter phenomena. Due to global warming, extreme frosts have become rarer, but a drop in temperature is still expected.
Cold air masses from Greenland will move to lower latitudes due to the activation of a cyclone in the North Atlantic. Initially, cold weather will cover Northwestern Europe, and later it will move to Central Europe and partially into Ukraine.
The western regions of Ukraine will feel particularly strong cooling. The temperature will drop by 10-13 degrees in two days. In the south and east of the country, the weather will be slightly warmer, and the temperature decrease will be slower.
Cold air masses will persist during the second decade of January, especially in Central Europe. The temperature will be a few degrees below the norm. In the western and southwestern regions of Ukraine, severe frosts are expected, while in other regions the temperature will be within the norm.
After the cooling at the beginning of January, by the end of the month the weather will start to change. The western wind will bring warmer and wetter air masses from the North Atlantic.
Temperature features in different regions of Ukraine
- In the Left Bank, the temperature will be warmer by 0.5-1.5 degrees;
- In the western and some southern regions, the temperature will be below the norm by 0.7-1.6 degrees, making January moderately cold.
In January, periods of moderate frosts down to -15...-20 degrees are possible. The strongest frosts are expected in the Carpathians and northern regions, but the southern regions and Crimea will remain under warm weather.
Throughout January, an excess of precipitation is expected across Ukraine, 10-40% above the norm. Only in the Left Bank will the amount of precipitation be within the norm.
At the beginning and the end of the month, rain and snowfalls are expected due to active cyclonic activity. Winds will be particularly strong in the western, northern, and eastern regions.
Thus, January 2025 is forecasted to be cold and rainy in most regions of Ukraine.
