Uncertainty Looms Over Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting as White House Shifts Focus to the Middle East.
Oleh Shamshur Weighs In on Ukraine-U.S. Relations
According to Espreso.tv: Oleh Shamshur, who previously served as Ukraine’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States and France, recently addressed the lack of a one-on-one meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump. He pointed out that Trump’s current priority lies with developments in the Middle East. According to Shamshur, the American leader is now primarily concerned with the conflict involving Iran, rather than the war between Russia and Ukraine.
A phone conversation took place between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on June 14. On the same day, Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Donald Trump to wish him a happy birthday. During that call, the two leaders agreed to meet the following week at the G7 summit in France. Despite this, Shamshur sees no meaningful shift in the U.S. approach to the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Right now, Trump’s main focus is the war with Iran—signing what appears to be an interim bilateral memorandum rather than a full agreement.”

Shamshur believes that European nations, for good reason, would like to play a more substantial role in resolving the conflict. He stressed that any negotiations must aim for a ceasefire—but not under the terms Russia would prefer. As a result, the state of bilateral relations between Ukraine and the U.S. remains tense, especially given the evolving global priorities set by the American administration.
Strategic Interests Shape the Negotiation Landscape
Shamshur’s remarks highlight a growing divergence between U.S. strategic interests and Ukraine’s immediate needs, which could hinder future talks aimed at resolving the conflict with Russia. At the same time, the increasing interest from European countries in taking on a more active diplomatic role signals potential shifts in international dynamics that may affect both sides going forward.
