50,000 per child - should we expect changes and what will the money suffice for.
In mid-July this year, former Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal declared that the government approved a bill that provides for an increase in the one-time payment at childbirth to 50,000 hryvnias.
There has been a breakdown of whether there are funds in the budget for this increase and whether there will be an increase in payments.
How much money will be needed to increase payments
Over the last 10 years, birth rates in Ukraine have decreased by 2.2 times. In 2016, only 14,000 children were born every month instead of the previous 32,000. This year, a total of 87,655 infants were born.
If this trend continues, by 2025 the total number of born children will be 187,310. This means that to increase payments to 50,000 hryvnias, 8 billion 765 million hryvnias will be needed.
Economist Andriy Dlihach noted that the amount to increase payments looks insignificant compared to other needs, such as military needs.
According to the expert, other tools should be sought to increase birth rates in Ukraine, not just increasing financial payments.
What can be bought for a newborn with 50,000 hryvnias
The main categories of expenses for parents are furniture, clothing, hygiene products, toys, and strollers and car seats.
For example, a quality crib costs from 5,000 to 10,000 hryvnias, and the cost of a changing table is 2,000-5,000 hryvnias.
Regarding clothing and textiles, the cost of a set of bodysuits and baby pants can range from 1,000 to 3,000 hryvnias.
Will there be an increase in payments to 50,000 hryvnias
The initiative to increase one-time payments has not yet been considered by the parliament, as the government has been dismissed. If the new government does not sign the bill, this initiative may remain on paper.
It should also be noted that parents of first-graders will receive 5,000 hryvnias in 2025 and a new financial aid has been introduced in the country.
