A Giant Geological Layer Discovered Beneath the Bermuda: It Keeps the Islands Afloat.
According to ТСН: The Bermuda Triangle, famous for its mysteries of disappearances, has become the subject of a new geological study that reveals interesting facts about its structure. Recent research has shown that beneath the islands lies a massive geological structure that challenges traditional notions of Earth's composition.
A 'Lifebuoy' for the Islands
Typically, volcanic islands gradually submerge due to tectonic plate movements, as seen in Hawaii. However, Bermuda is an exception. The volcanoes on these islands have been inactive for 31 million years, but the island remains elevated above the water thanks to a specific 'hump'.
A team of seismologists from the USA discovered that beneath the crust of the Bermuda Islands, there is an additional layer of rock with a thickness of 20 kilometers.
'Usually, there goes the oceanic crust, and then the mantle is expected. But on the Bermuda Islands, there is this 'other' layer, positioned beneath the crust... Such a thickness has never been observed in any other similar layer in the world,' explained lead study author William Fraser from the Carnegie Institution.
This layer functions like a 'slab', lifting the ocean floor by approximately 500 meters and preventing the islands from submerging.
Legacy of the Supercontinent
Scientists believe this significant layer formed during the last volcanic eruption when mantle rock penetrated the crust and solidified. Geologist Sara Mazza noted that the rock composition indicates their origin from deep mantle, likely formed during the formation of the supercontinent Pangaea (between 900 and 300 million years ago).
'The fact that we are located in an area that was once the heart of the last supercontinent is part of the story that makes this place unique,' she said.
Researchers plan to study other islands around the world to understand whether Bermuda is the only place with such a geological foundation.
These discoveries could have significant implications for our understanding of geological processes occurring in different parts of the planet. The Bermuda Triangle, with its age-old mysteries, now opens new horizons for science, which may influence future geological research.
