Tragedy in Lisbon: funicular derailed, 17 killed.
According to inkorr.com: The number of victims in the incident on the popular Elevador da Glória funicular in Lisbon has risen to 17. Among the deceased are seven men and eight women.
Circumstances of the accident
The accident occurred when the funicular car, descending from the picturesque São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint to the Restauradores square, lost control, derailed, and crashed into a building. It is preliminarily believed that the cause of the disaster was a cable break, and the failure of the emergency brakes exacerbated the situation.
Injured
As a result of the accident, 20 people were also injured. Among them are citizens of various countries, including Portugal, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Cape Verde, Canada, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Morocco.
Government response
Emergency services are working at the scene, and the police are conducting an investigation to identify possible criminal circumstances. The Mayor of Lisbon expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, while the president and the prime minister provided support to all those affected.
