Ukraine Implements Emergency Power Cuts, Halting Metro Services.
Power Supply Crisis in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Emergency electricity blackouts have been enforced across multiple regions of Ukraine, leading to the suspension of all previously announced hourly outage schedules. As of 11:30, the planned power cut schedules have been canceled in the following oblasts:
- Sumy
- Chernihiv
- Zhytomyr
- Mykolaiv
- Odesa
- Dnipropetrovsk
- Kyiv
Due to the lack of voltage in the power grid, metro systems in the capital, Kyiv, and the city of Kharkiv have been temporarily shut down. These emergency measures highlight the severity of the ongoing strain on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has been a repeated target of attacks.
Official Response and New Measures
Kyiv's metro system is currently operating solely as a public shelter. Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, stated:
“Metro traffic has been halted due to low voltage in the network. The underground metro stations can currently function as shelters.” — Vitali Klitschko
Separately, Oleksiy Kuleba reported that Ukraine has received energy equipment with a total capacity equivalent to one nuclear power plant unit. This new equipment is part of efforts to stabilize the national power supply during the ongoing energy crisis.
The power supply situation in Ukraine remains critical, driven by factors including the consequences of military actions and the aging energy infrastructure. National authorities are implementing measures to improve the situation, such as securing new energy equipment. The temporary closure of the metro in Kyiv and Kharkiv underscores the seriousness of the energy crisis and the priority of ensuring public safety during this difficult period.
