Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker, Imposes €10 Million Bond.
Tanker Ethera Detained
According to UATV: Belgian authorities have seized the tanker Ethera and imposed a bond of €10,020,000 for its release. The vessel, part of Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' used to circumvent sanctions, was intercepted in the North Sea between Saturday night and Sunday. It was then diverted to the port of Zeebrugge. This action is part of ongoing Belgian military operations to enforce maritime security and EU sanctions. The Ethera is itself subject to sanctions from both the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Violations and Official Statements
The detained tanker Ethera was found to have 45 violations, including the use of forged certificates. Its crew of 21 includes a Russian captain and 13 members of Indian origin. The ship was en route from Morocco to Saint Petersburg when it was boarded by Belgian forces on March 1st in an operation codenamed 'Blue Uninvited Guest'. This incident highlights the complex challenges of enforcing sanctions on the high seas.
Belgian Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden commented on the situation, stating: 'Growing geopolitical tensions and organized crime are making maritime infrastructure and shipping vulnerable.'
In turn, Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Theo Franken emphasized that 'the government is taking tough measures against shadow fleet vessels, ensuring compliance with European sanctions,' underscoring the serious approach Belgian authorities are taking to control shipping in the region.
This case reinforces the critical importance of adhering to international norms and sanctions in maritime trade, especially against the backdrop of rising global political tensions. Belgian authorities continue to implement measures to secure their waters and uphold international obligations, which may influence future international relations and trade practices in the region.
