Limitations of Protecting Energy Infrastructure

According to ТСН: The construction of protective structures known as 'turtles' cannot guarantee reliable protection of energy facilities from missile attacks, particularly from hypersonic missiles like the 'Kinzhal'.

This opinion was expressed by the head of the All-Ukrainian Energy Assembly, former Minister of Energy of Ukraine Ivan Plachkov during a broadcast on 'Kyiv 24'. According to him, given the scale and specificity of energy facilities, covering them with protective structures is physically impossible. The expert emphasized that the main focus for ensuring security should be air defense, rather than the construction of concrete shelters.

Plachkov also noted that without effective air defense, it is practically impossible to protect large energy infrastructure facilities from modern missile threats.

'It is impossible to build structures or 'turtles' that would protect energy facilities from missiles or 'Kinzhal', one needs to focus on air defense, not on building concrete shelters,' he said.

He also stressed that the varying levels of destruction in regions are directly related to the nature of enemy attacks. In those places where there were intensive and massive strikes, the energy system sustained critical damage, leading to prolonged electricity supply restrictions.

Plachkov reminded that the situation in Kyiv's energy system remains extremely complicated due to the combination of enemy attacks and low temperatures.

The Ministry of Energy is not providing forecasts regarding the restoration of electricity supply, while authorities are involving reserve capacities to power residential areas.

In light of the experts' opinions, the issue of strengthening energy infrastructure is becoming even more relevant. In the context of constant attacks that Ukraine is experiencing, it is important to find effective solutions for protecting critical facilities and ensuring stability in electricity supply. Alongside this, it is necessary to intensify efforts in implementing reliable air defense systems to reduce the vulnerability of the country's energy sector to threats. The situation remains tense, and this affects the well-being of many Ukrainians.
