Belarusian opposition hopes for ISS investigation against Lukashenko

The Lithuanian government has submitted documents to the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the crimes of Lukashenko's regime against Belarusians. This is a very strong step and a nightmare for Lukashenko if the ICC issues a warrant for his arrest. It will make him a toxic outcast for the entire civilized world.

This was said on the air of the FREEДOM TV channel by Franak Viačorka, advisor to the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

"Lukashenko reacts very nervously to the fact that Lithuania has submitted materials about his crimes to the ICC. I have already said that the ghost of Milošević looms before Lukashenko. He was the best friend of the Belarusian dictator. And when Milošević ended up in The Hague, it was a vast pain and fear for Lukashenko. Now the ghost of his comrade is calling Lukashenko after him. And Lukashenko understands this," — Viačorka said.

He noted: this is the first Time Lukashenko can actually be brought to trial, as Belarus is not a member of the Rome Statute.

"Therefore, it is quite real that an arrest warrant for Lukashenko may be issued, as in the case of the Russian dictator Putin. This will be a massive blow for Lukashenko, as he will become a toxic outcast for the entire civilized world. Now everyone is awaiting the ICC's decision and the start of the investigation into Lukashenko's crimes against Belarusians," the program guest clarified.

He noted that the documents collected by Lithuania are the main evidence: "Lithuania's task was to show that the ICC has jurisdiction over the crimes charged against Lukashenko".

According to the statute of the International Court, the mass departure of half a million Belarusians from the country, when they were forced to move to Lithuania or Poland due to fear of reprisals, falls under the article on mass deportation.

"We hope that an arrest warrant will be issued. We also hope that other countries will support this investigation. Not only concerning crimes against Belarusians, but also there is another parallel case — the removal of Ukrainian children to Belarusian territory and their indoctrination," — Viačorka concluded.
