A New Invasive Threat: Blue Crabs Discovered in the Black Sea.
Blue Crab Sighting in the Tuzly Lagoons National Park
According to Novyny.live: At least twelve blue crabs, an invasive species posing a significant threat to the Black Sea ecosystem, have been documented in the Tuzly Lagoons National Park. This crab species is native to the Atlantic coast of the Americas, with a range stretching from Canada to Argentina. The first report of the blue crab in the Black Sea emerged in 2025. The Black Sea is particularly vulnerable to invasive species due to its unique and sensitive brackish-water environment.
Ecosystem Impact of the Blue Crab
The blue crab can grow to 20-25 centimeters in width, featuring bright blue claws and a light-brown shell. According to expert Ivan Rusev,
“This is an invasive species. Its native habitat is the Atlantic Ocean. It likely reached the Black Sea either through ships' ballast water or by migrating through connecting straits.”The arrival of this aggressive predator in the region endangers native marine life.
Ivan Rusev further explains that the Black Sea provides ideal conditions for the crab, adding:
“It will outcompete and displace native species. This is a predator with a major competitive advantage.”Consequently, the presence of the blue crab in the Tuzly Lagoons has raised serious concerns among ecologists and scientists, as its impact on the local ecosystem could be substantial and damaging.
The increasing population of blue crabs in the Black Sea is an alarming sign for environmentalists, as invasive species frequently lead to reduced biodiversity and the disruption of natural ecological balances. This incident underscores the critical need for ongoing monitoring of marine ecosystems and for implementing measures to prevent the further spread of invasive species that threaten native flora and fauna.
Experts are urging for immediate action to study and control the situation in the region.
