Lies, Fear, and Hope for a Miracle. How America Chooses a President.
In this US presidential election, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are competing. Sociological studies did not reveal a significant advantage for any of the candidates. The elections differed from previous ones, and "Glavkom" gathered some interesting facts about them.
Support of Women
Throughout the election process, Kamala Harris enjoyed greater support from women than Donald Trump. However, it does not depend on gender, but on the political views of the candidates. Democrats advocate for women's rights, including reproductive health and the right to choose regarding abortions.
Interestingly, as the voting day approached, more women were searching on Google for the answer to the question: "Will my husband find out who I voted for?" This may be related to the fact that some women's opinions on voting differ from the opinions of their husbands, who cast their votes for Trump. This question is most relevant not only in Republican states but also in New York, which usually leans towards Democrats.
Oldest Candidates
Joseph Biden is the oldest US president, and Donald Trump – the oldest among all presidential candidates. During four years of serving as president, Trump turned 78 years old. On January 20, 2025, when the newly elected president takes office, Trump will be five months older than Biden.
Change of Candidate During Elections
Replacing a candidate during a presidential election is not a new phenomenon. However, the replacement of Joe Biden with Kamala Harris became the longest in history. This happened on July 21, when Biden decided not to run due to pressure within his party and unsuccessful debates with Trump. This occurred three and a half months before the voting day. Trump uses the candidate's replacement as evidence of Biden’s and the Democratic Party's instability. However, in US history, candidate replacements have occurred repeatedly, including cases with incumbent presidents.
Attempts on Trump's Life
During the election campaign, there were several attempts on Donald Trump's life, including his being wounded by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania. Investigations were conducted, which indicated an assassination attempt. In US history, there have been examples of attempts on presidents or presidential candidates.
Lies Go Unpunished
This election campaign saw instances of blatant lies and discrimination, particularly from the candidates. For example, Trump claimed that immigrants from Haiti eat household pets and also alleged that abortions are allowed at 9 months of pregnancy. Such statements were refuted by the debate moderators. Candidate Harris, on her part, accused Trump of inciting the storming of the White House, but to this day, there has been no court decision confirming his guilt. These instances of lying did not affect Trump's popularity among voters.
These interesting facts demonstrate the uniqueness of this election process.
