UK Seizes Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker for the First Time: 100,000 Tons of Oil Captured.
Royal Marines Board and Seize the Smyrtos Tanker
According to Espreso.tv: In a landmark operation, elite units of the UK's Royal Marines, working alongside the National Crime Agency, stormed and captured the oil tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel. The vessel was carrying 100,000 tons of Russian Urals crude oil, marking the first time Britain has physically seized a tanker belonging to Moscow's shadow fleet.
The six-hour mission involved a coordinated deployment of multiple military assets, including:
- the frigate HMS Sutherland,
- the mine-hunter HMS Ledbury,
- a P-8 Poseidon anti-submarine aircraft,
- and helicopters from the Fleet Air Arm.
The Smyrtos had previously been registered under the flag of Cameroon but was later removed from that registry. Under Article 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the UK was legally empowered to arrest the vessel because it was effectively stateless.
Ripple Effects on International Shipping Lanes
The seizure of the Smyrtos prompted other shadow fleet vessels—including the Maini, Lion I, and Sona—to alter their courses immediately after the raid. The UK is now actively building a maritime barrier in critical chokepoints, particularly the English Channel, signaling a tightening grip on sea routes in the region.
This operation underscores Britain's growing willingness to confront activities linked to Russia's shadow fleet, a move that could significantly impact global oil markets and shipping security. Beyond disrupting illicit transport networks, the capture of the tanker serves as a strong warning to other nations about the need to tighten control over their territorial waters and crack down on criminal schemes tied to energy smuggling.
