The government of Great Britain has imposed sanctions on the two largest oil companies of Russia - 'Gazprom Neft' and 'Surgutneftegas', which extract over 1 million barrels of oil daily and receive about 23 billion dollars in annual profit.

This information is reported on the official website of the British government.

According to the government release, the profits of these companies are directly used to finance the Russian military machine. The sanctions were introduced simultaneously with similar measures by the USA and aim to limit Russia's ability to finance aggression against Ukraine.

'Revenues from oil sales are a lifeline for Putin's military economy. We will not stand back and let oil revenues undermine the lives of Ukrainians,' emphasized the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky highly appreciated the decision of the British government, stressing the importance of countering the shadow operations of the Russian fleet in oil trading.

According to the UK Foreign Secretary, these sanctions will lead to the exhaustion of the Russian military budget and help save the lives of Ukrainians.

Reminder about US sanctions against the Russian oil industry

The USA imposed large-scale sanctions against the Russian oil industry on January 10, 2025. The sanctions concerned Gazprom Neft, Surgutneftegas, and over 250 individuals, including legal entities.

180 vessels, dozens of traders, and leaders of the Russian oil industry were under sanctions. The Chinese port operator Shandong Port Group has already closed its ports to tankers of the Russian 'shadow fleet'.

The Biden administration is also preparing additional sanctions against Chinese companies for supporting Russia with the aim of strengthening Ukraine's positions before Donald Trump takes office on January 20.
