Kyrylo Budanov on War: Adherence to Principles is Essential, Even in Conflict.
The Critical Need for Rules in Wartime
According to TSN.ua: Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, has stressed that certain boundaries must be respected even during war. He highlighted the unacceptability of violence against civilians and attacks on hospitals and cultural sites. Budanov stated:
'Even in a war we consider unjust and aggressive, we must uphold principles to bring about a lasting and long-awaited peace.' Kyrylo Budanov
He also expressed his profound disapproval of using weapons against defenseless people, declaring:
'I cannot comprehend how one can use weapons against people who are physically incapable of resistance.' Kyrylo Budanov
War Crimes Tribunal Developments
In a related war crimes trial, the court sentenced Denys Kulikovskyi, known as 'Palych,' who was the chief overseer and torturer at the 'Izolyatsia' prison in occupied Donetsk, to 15 years in prison. Separately, the European Union has allocated €10 million to establish a Special Tribunal aimed at holding Russian leadership accountable for actions during the conflict. These legal processes underscore the international community's focus on accountability for atrocities committed since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022.
These events highlight both the imperative of adhering to humanitarian norms during war and the pursuit of justice for crimes committed. Kyrylo Budanov's remarks signal the Ukrainian leadership's intent to maintain ethical principles even under the extreme duress of conflict. The sentencing of Kulikovskyi and the EU's funding for the tribunal reflect global support for Ukraine's quest for justice and war crimes accountability, representing a significant step toward restoring justice for the victims of the war.
