Shower in the Dark: A New Trend for Battling Insomnia Without Medication.
According to ТСН: Insomnia has become a serious problem for millions of people worldwide. However, a new viral trend – showering in the dark – may provide a simple solution for those who want to relax and fall asleep faster without medication.
Expert Tips
Sleep experts have long advised adhering to a few simple rules to fight insomnia: avoid gadgets before bedtime, reduce caffeine intake, and maintain a regular sleep schedule.
Now they are drawing attention to another interesting option – a warm shower in the dark or dim light, which has recently become popular on social media. This approach may positively impact the quality of nighttime rest.
Mechanism of the Shower in the Dark
Doctors cannot fully explain how this method works yet, but they believe that dim light signals the body to prepare for relaxation mode, easing the process of falling asleep.
“Research has shown that a warm shower or bath before bedtime can improve sleep quality and shorten the time it takes to fall asleep. This is likely related to the impact of warm water on reducing body temperature – a key signal for sleep onset. Taking a shower in dim light can also signal the body that it is time to rest, as low light promotes the release of one of the main sleep hormones – melatonin. This helps one calm down and 'switch off' before sleep, facilitating falling asleep. Calm music can also soothe the mind, although for some, the sound of water is relaxing enough,” said sleep medicine consultant Dr. Ellie Gare from the Royal Brompton Hospital.
“A shower in dim light alone will not solve serious or chronic sleep problems, but it can be a useful part of a calming evening ritual,” added clinical lead for insomnia treatment at Boots Online Doctor Dr. Claire Rums.
Popularity on Social Media
The shower in the dark has become popular among wellness enthusiasts who believe it helps “clear the day's energy remnants and prepare for night, rest, or intimacy.” Recently, this practice has been actively discussed on social media, where users share their positive experiences.
“One way I reboot my nervous system as a stay-at-home mom is by taking a shower in the dark,” noted the creator of a TikTok video that gained over 12,000 views.
Some users also voice their support for this method, claiming its effectiveness.
Research on Sleep
According to Sleep Foundation data, it takes the average person 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep after the lights are turned off. A meta-analysis of 30 studies involving 2,500 participants showed that high-intensity yoga for 30 minutes twice a week significantly improves sleep compared to walking, running, or strength training. Scientists noted the positive effect occurs within 8–10 weeks due to the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system through breath control and physical activity.
Thus, the practice of showering in the dark may be a simple and effective way to improve nighttime rest. It is not only gaining popularity but also arousing interest thanks to its simplicity and accessibility. Studies indicate the importance of regular rituals and attention to the conditions under which we fall asleep, making this idea even more relevant in today's world.
