Which trees are prohibited from being planted in Ukraine

The list of trees that are categorically prohibited from being planted in Ukraine includes 13 plants. These trees include:

  • Ailanthus altissima
  • Aralia manchurica
  • Ulmus minor
  • Gleditsia triacanthos
  • Juglans nigra
  • Quercus rubra
  • Caragana arborescens
  • Acer negundo
  • Olea europaea subsp. europaea
  • Paulownia tomentosa
  • Robinia pseudoacacia
  • Prunus serotina
  • Fraxinus pennsylvanica

Why these trees cannot be planted in Ukraine

The issue is that all these trees spread very actively, displacing surrounding plants. Additionally, the plants on the above list damage the soil structure in gardens and orchards and do not participate in natural food chains.

Some species even have quite aggressive roots that can damage entire foundations and utilities of the house.

However, this ban applies only to new trees intended for planting in the area. If you already have any of these trees growing on your plot, do not remove it unless it poses a direct threat to the ecosystem.

Since a full-scale war is currently ongoing in Ukraine, which destroys entire forests, it is advisable to use only local trees that are considered resilient to the climate. This helps combat soil erosion, improve air quality, and preserve natural landscapes.

The decree banning the planting of certain types of trees in Ukraine clarifies that some plants can cause significant harmful consequences for the environment and the infrastructure of houses. By using local tree species, the state of the environment can be improved and the natural resources of the country preserved.
