North Korea prohibits jeans and bright makeup: what else citizens cannot wear
In North Korea, citizens' appearance is strictly controlled by the state. What is considered normal in the world is viewed there as 'Western influence,' which can threaten the regime.

What is prohibited to wear in North Korea

Ban on jeans

Blue jeans, ripped models, and 'skinny' styles are banned in North Korea. Authorities consider them an expression of another culture. Now only classic black pants of loose cut are allowed.

Women's clothing

Miniskirts and dresses above the knee are prohibited. It is recommended to choose outfits of medium or long length. Low necklines, open shoulders, and swimsuits are also not allowed. There are state standards for the depth of necklines, height of heels, and length of skirts.

Makeup and jewelry

Bright makeup is prohibited. It is recommended to use calm shades: brown, light pink, and pastel. Red lipstick is banned, as well as piercings.

Tattoos

Tattoos are controlled in the country. Only those that glorify the homeland or the ruling ideology are allowed. All others are considered a sign of 'poor upbringing.'

Dress code for men and students

Men must wear pants and a collared shirt. School uniforms are mandatory, consisting of a white shirt, dark blue pants or skirt, bright orange tie, and jacket.

For tourists

Foreigners are advised to avoid overly short or provocative clothing in public places to avoid problems with the police.

All this demonstrates that in North Korea, fashion is not self-expression but control. Clothing, hairstyle, and makeup must emphasize submission to the system rather than individuality.
