The Verkhovna Rada rejects constitutional changes for the Russian Federation: why this is a fundamental decision.
According to ТСН: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will not accept any amendments to the Constitution that could satisfy the Russian Federation. Making changes to the country's fundamental law regarding territorial concessions is impossible even within the framework of a peace agreement.
This was stated during the Morning.LIVE broadcast by Deputy Serhiy Nahornyak.
'The Ukrainian parliament will not take responsibility — to make changes to the Constitution regarding territorial concessions to the Russian Federation,' the deputy stressed.
He noted that the adoption of such decisions could create a dangerous precedent, where other countries might act with military force.
In Nahornyak's opinion, even less critical issues, such as the refusal to join NATO, will not gain support in the Verkhovna Rada. To adopt changes to the Constitution, more than 300 votes are needed, and he is convinced that such decisions are not possible in parliament.
'The Russians promoted all these points, knowing that Ukraine would not approve them, and then blamed Ukraine for not wanting peace, saying, look, we want peace, but they do not,' said the representative of the 'Servant of the People'.
Position of the Ukrainian leadership
Advisor to the President's Office Mykhailo Podolyak emphasized that territorial issues, military quantities, and alliances are the most sensitive aspects of the 'peace plan'. These issues require discussion at the highest level between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump.
Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the President's Office, noted that territorial concessions to the Russian Federation within the peace plan are an invitation to a new war. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the responsibility of the aggressor, cannot be a subject of bargaining. Peace must be just.
Opinion of the Ukrainian Ambassador to the USA
Ukraine's Ambassador to the USA Olha Stefanishyna stated that Ukraine does not consider the issue of changing borders. According to her, possible discussions may only pertain to technical details regarding the determination of the 'line of cessation', but 'changing Ukrainian borders cannot be a subject of negotiations.'
These statements reflect a clear position of the Ukrainian authorities on key issues related to sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is important for Ukraine not only to preserve its borders but also to ensure a fair peace that excludes any compromises that may lead to new threats. The situation remains tense, and further negotiations require caution and adherence to national interests.
