Former Defense Ministry Official Bribed for Army Contracts, Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation Reveals.
Corruption Scheme Uncovered at Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense
According to Novyny.live: The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) has exposed a corrupt arrangement in which a former high-ranking official from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense accepted cash and a paid vacation from business owners based in Lviv. In exchange, he helped them secure contracts to supply personal protective equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The suspect is identified as a former deputy head of the Main Department of Material Resources within the ministry.
According to investigators, between March and April 2022, the entrepreneurs transferred 150,000 hryvnias to accounts linked to the ex-official. Later, in late 2022, one of the Lviv businessmen also covered the cost of the official’s stay at a resort in Truskavets, totaling nearly 290,000 hryvnias. These findings point to systemic corruption within the state procurement system, a critical issue as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.
State Procurement Under Scrutiny
Data shows that the total value of contracts awarded to companies managed by the individuals involved in the case exceeded 1.8 billion hryvnias. Due to the substandard equipment delivered to the Armed Forces, the state suffered losses of over 1.167 billion hryvnias. These figures highlight the severity of the situation and underscore the need for a thorough investigation.
The Lviv businessmen and the former Ministry of Defense official are currently under suspicion by the State Bureau of Investigation, confirming their alleged involvement in corrupt activities and abuses within the public procurement sector. The investigation is ongoing, and further details may emerge in the near future.
This exposure underscores the deep-seated problems within Ukraine’s state procurement system, especially during wartime, when equipping the Armed Forces must be the highest priority.
