Could Russian Strikes on Gas Production Trigger an Energy Crisis in Ukraine? A Lawmaker Sounds the Alarm.
Threats to Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
According to Novyny.live: On March 19, during the program 'Evening.LIVE,' Oleksiy Kucherenko, a lawmaker from the 'Batkivshchyna' party, warned of imminent Russian attacks on Ukraine's gas infrastructure. He stated that such strikes would have severe consequences for the nation's energy sector. Kucherenko emphasized that
“Attacks on Ukrainian gas extraction will happen—unfortunately, without a doubt. Russia will target 'Naftogaz' first,” — Oleksiy Kucherenko.
That same day, Russian shelling left several Ukrainian regions without power. Blackouts were reported in:
- Zaporizhzhia Oblast
- Kharkiv Oblast
- Sumy Oblast
These events highlight the critical need for energy resilience, a point also raised by Yuliia Svyrydenko. She noted that Ukraine requires nearly 278 billion UAH to ensure energy stability.
Kucherenko added that one of the enemy's primary goals is to disrupt the gas balance, as gas is essential for heat generation and additional cogeneration electricity. As a result, Ukraine's energy situation remains extremely precarious amid ongoing Russian threats.
The statements from Oleksiy Kucherenko and recent developments underscore that Ukraine's energy security continues to be jeopardized by Russian aggression. In wartime, maintaining a stable energy infrastructure is vital for the country's functioning and economic support. Given the massive financial investments needed for restoration and modernization, Ukraine must find effective ways to protect its resources and reduce vulnerability to external threats.
