Why Dnipro's Metro Expansion Plans Have Stalled.
The Dnipro Metro System
According to Novyny.live: Opened on December 29, 1995, the Dnipro Metro is the smallest subway system in Ukraine. It plays a crucial role in the city's transport network, despite having just one line that spans 7.8 kilometers and serves only six stations.
Stations and Development Hurdles
The metro's stations are:
- Pokrovska
- Prospekt Svobody
- Zavodska
- Metalurhiv
- Metrobudivnykiv
- Vokzalna
In January 2008, the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council allocated 1 million hryvnias for the construction of new stations, with the total projected cost of this expansion estimated at approximately 360 million hryvnias. A significant step came in 2011 when the metro became municipal property, which was expected to facilitate its development.
However, expansion plans have since ground to a halt, primarily due to difficulties in relocating residents from the planned construction areas. It is worth noting that Ukraine has secured a loan agreement for about 300 million euros with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which could provide vital funding for future transport infrastructure projects, including this one.
Though modest in scale, the Dnipro Metro remains a key component of the city's infrastructure, offering convenient access to various districts. Its expansion is seen as essential for improving urban mobility, reducing road congestion, and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Successful execution of these plans, supported by strategic investment, would significantly upgrade the city's public transport network.
