Ukraine's 'Contract 18-24' Offers Million Hryvnia Bonus for Military Volunteers.
Ukraine's 'Contract 18-24' Initiative
According to Novyny.live: Since February 2022, Ukraine has been running the 'Contract 18-24' program, which offers a substantial financial incentive for military service. This initiative targets young people who have not previously served, promising them a total of one million hryvnias for a year of duty. The scheme aims to bolster military recruitment by providing significant monetary rewards, with volunteers potentially earning up to 120,000 hryvnias per month. This program is part of Ukraine's broader effort to strengthen its defense forces during a time of national mobilization.
Opportunities and Inherent Risks
The program allows volunteers to select their military specialties, a feature designed to increase motivation for enlistment. Notably, the initiative has also been extended to citizens over the age of 60, demonstrating an effort to recruit from a wider demographic. However, service on the front lines carries severe dangers, as tragically highlighted by the recent death of 28-year-old Polish volunteer Kasper 'French' Bass. Furthermore, for volunteers from Belarus, a specific legal complication exists: terminating their contract also removes their legal grounds for remaining in Ukraine, potentially leaving them in a difficult position. While the financial benefits are considerable, the program underscores the grave risks and complex challenges associated with wartime military service.
