5 most dangerous engines in used cars: which models to avoid.
One of the most unsuccessful powertrains of the last decade, yet one of the most popular. The engine is installed in the vast majority of cars from the Stellantis group, including Opel, from B-segment cars through the Peugeot 508 to SUVs like the DS7 Crossback or Peugeot 5008.
1.2 PureTech suffers from significant oil problems (excessive consumption, mixing with fuel, contamination), which sooner or later lead to breakdowns and ultimately to engine destruction. The real horror is the wet timing belt, which dissolves due to the action of gasoline mixed with oil.
Mechanics strongly advise against buying a car with this engine, regardless of maintenance history, mileage, or technical condition. Even purchasing a car in good condition does not guarantee trouble-free operation.
Ford 1.0 EcoBoost
Another very popular engine. Installed in almost all Ford models: from Fiesta and Focus to Transit PHEV and the rare Mondeo. It is a pleasant, economical, and dynamic unit that tempts with power but can create significant problems. Opinions are sharply divided: some drivers do not experience any problems yet and are satisfied, while others have already faced issues.
The three-cylinder engine tolerates a very strong mixing of oil with gasoline. However, over time, it faces increasingly serious combustion issues (the first symptoms are intermittent operation and jerking during movement), lubrication troubles, and even leaks from the fuel system. Users encounter cracks in the cylinder block, worn sleeves, and cylinder rings.
Popular Stellantis 1.2 PureTech and Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engines, although it's hard to find cars without them, can turn into a source of serious problems for owners due to oil issues and part wear. Even with all maintenance efforts, there is no guarantee of trouble-free operation.Read also
