Expert Warns of Soaring Food Prices: Bread Could Reach 150 UAH per Kilogram.
Forecast for Rising Food Prices
According to TSN.ua: Expert Larysa Huk has issued a warning about likely increases in food prices amid ongoing energy uncertainty. Key staples expected to become more expensive include:
- Grains
- Flour
- Bread
- Sugar
- Cooking oil
She noted that price hikes for grains could reach up to 10% within the inflation rate, while flour is projected to become 10-15% more expensive over the course of a year. These projections come as Ukraine's economy continues to face significant pressures from the ongoing war.
Prices for Essential Goods
Huk highlighted the price of baguettes, which currently ranges from 45 to 51 UAH for a 300-gram unit. According to her, fresh bread made from quality flour could reach a price of 150 UAH per kilogram within the year.
“No one has noticed that quality bread crossed the 100 UAH per kilogram mark a long time ago,” the expert stated.
Regarding sugar, its average price currently stands at 26-28 UAH per kilogram. Huk also pointed to the situation with cooking oil, which is becoming more expensive. At the beginning of 2025, a bottle of oil (approximately 850 grams) could cost around 50 UAH, whereas now it is difficult to find for less than 61 UAH per bottle. She emphasized that sunflower oil contributed $5.2 billion to the total food export revenue in 2025.
Inflation in February is forecast to remain at January's level—around 1-1.1%. This underscores the importance of closely monitoring prices for basic foodstuffs during a period of economic instability.
The rise in food prices in Ukraine, as noted by the expert, may be driven not only by the energy crisis but also by the country's broader economic situation. This will affect the purchasing power of the population, which is already feeling the effects of inflation. Consequently, consumers should prepare for further changes in the food market and consider these factors when planning their expenses.
