The USA and Europe will provide Ukraine with security guarantees without Russia's consent: statement by former ambassador.
According to ТСН: Russia should not be involved in the process of providing security guarantees that the United States and European partners are giving to Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by William Taylor, the former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine.
Progress in the 20-point plan
He noted that significant progress has already been made between Ukraine and the U.S. with the involvement of European partners within the framework of the 20-point plan.
“Regarding the 20-point plan, or the 'puzzle', I believe that tangible progress has been made between the Ukrainian and American parties with the involvement of European partners in aligning these provisions. This can really be seen as an important step forward,” Taylor said.
Russia's goals and the U.S. position
In the diplomat's opinion, Russia is using negotiations only to buy time, not as a real way to peace. Taylor emphasized that Moscow is deliberately stalling in an attempt to buy time, and Putin does not see negotiations as an opportunity to resolve the situation.
“I see no reason to believe that Russia is seriously engaged in this process. Frankly, I do not think the Russians take these negotiations seriously,” he emphasized.
The former ambassador also noted that the security guarantees provided by the U.S. and Europe are aimed at preventing a repeat invasion by Russia.
“Despite significant progress made between Americans, Ukrainians, and Europeans regarding this 20-point plan, there are no signs that Russia is willing to support it. Ultimately, we do not need them to give their approval,” the diplomat explained.
Taylor concluded that Russia's consent is not necessary for the actions intended by the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine.
“Russia's consent is not necessary for the security guarantees that the United States provides to Ukraine, nor for the guarantees from European partners, nor for the actions that the coalition of states supporting Ukraine is ready to undertake. We do not need Russia's consent. We must act because we seek security for Ukraine, do not want to allow a repeat invasion, and aim to deter Russia from further aggressive actions,” Taylor summed up.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed readiness to commit to U.S. participation in the defense of Ukraine; however, his statement depends on the assurance that Russia will not attempt to attack again.
It was also noted that Ukraine was promised strong security guarantees in case of a new strike from Russia.
Thus, the position of the United States and European partners remains clear: they will strive to support Ukraine even if Russia is not ready for constructive dialogue. These factors are key in shaping the future security in the region, which remains under the threat of aggression.
