The State of Electric Transport in Odesa

According to Novyny.live: For over a month, Odesa's electric public transport—including trams and trolleybuses—has been at a complete standstill due to power outages and strikes on infrastructure. This disruption has created severe consequences for the city's entire transport network, affecting daily commutes, the technical condition of the system, and its workforce. This situation highlights the vulnerability of urban infrastructure during prolonged conflict.

Former Odesa Vice Mayor Dmytro Zheman expressed deep concern over the long-term effects of this shutdown. He emphasized that the electric transport system requires constant operational load to function correctly.

“The electric transport structure is like a living organism. You cannot simply stop it and then quickly 'revive' it. A restart will be extremely difficult,” noted Dmytro Zheman.

It is reported that the vehicles are not receiving regular technical maintenance due to the lack of operation.

“The contact network, depots, substations—all of this must work constantly. If they sit idle, restoration afterward takes a great deal of time,” Zheman stressed.

Consequently, serious questions arise regarding the state of the rolling stock. “I am sure there are major concerns about the condition of the vehicles right now. They are standing idle, not being serviced. If we tried to launch tomorrow, very few units would be fit for the line,” remarked Dmytro Zheman.

Furthermore, the loss of skilled workers poses a critical threat to Odesa's electric transport. “People need to live. If an enterprise isn't working, families are left without income. Staff are leaving, and there is simply no one to replace them,” he stated. The prolonged stoppage is leading to a staffing crisis that could severely complicate any future recovery of the system.

Conclusion

Therefore, the electric transport crisis in Odesa demands urgent action to restore service and maintain infrastructure to prevent even more severe consequences for the city.

The absence of electric transport has not only impacted public mobility but has also created significant risks for the technical health of the infrastructure and the preservation of its workforce. If the situation is not resolved soon, it could lead to long-term damage to the transport system, requiring a comprehensive recovery plan and effective resource management to overcome.
