According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, appointed a new head of his Office - the Chief of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov. This decision was made a month after the dismissal of Andriy Yermak from this position.

Reasons for Appointment

The problems that arose due to corruption scandals were the reason for Yermak's removal, as noted by The Washington Post.

“This appointment aims to dispel concerns about the corruption scandal that removed the previous chief assistant - close friend of Zelensky, Andriy Yermak,” the journalists note.

Andriy Yermak, appointed in 2020 after working with Zelensky in a production studio, lacked support among Ukrainians, who accused him of excessive control and harsh behavior.

“Many in Washington also considered Yermak to be conflict-prone and controlling, describing him as an obstacle to cooperation. He effectively disappeared from public life after his resignation. The 39-year-old Budanov is a completely different character. Most importantly, he was not involved in any corruption scandals,” the media reporters believe.

Expectations from the New Leader

Zelensky emphasized that Budanov's appointment indicates concerns about negotiations with Russia, Ukraine's military strategy in the future, and overall security.

“Budanov's appointment means that Zelensky is worried about negotiations with Russia and Ukraine's military strategy in the future, as well as security, including, likely even his personal security when it comes to the transfer of power and possible elections or something else,” said Olena Trehub, a public activist and secretary of NAKO, a non-governmental anti-corruption commission.

Zelensky noted that Budanov has experience in key areas such as national security and diplomatic relations, emphasizing the need to focus on the development of defense forces.

“Budanov has specialized experience in these areas and enough strength to achieve results,” Zelensky stated.

In conclusion, Kyrylo Budanov, who has held the position of head of the GUR since August 2020, will be responsible for organizing intelligence activities in the context of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine.

Budanov's appointment could be a significant step towards improving governance and resolving the situation in Ukraine, as today trust in key officials is of exceptional importance in wartime. His experience may help establish constructive relations on the international stage, which, in turn, will positively impact the country's security.
