The EU plans to use frozen Russian assets: what this means for Ukraine.
According to ТСН: European leaders are actively discussing how to use frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine. This question is becoming increasingly relevant within the EU as a strategic tool to strengthen pressure on Russia and enhance security in Europe.
Activating Negotiations
Correspondent Tetiana Vysotska noted in a live broadcast on Espresso TV:
It's interesting that in Europe, they are actually bringing out this trump card — frozen assets. And if you listen carefully to the statements of politicians, almost everyone talks about finding a legal way that will allow using Russian funds for Ukraine, thus increasing pressure on the Kremlin.
France's Position
Vysotska also emphasized that French President Emmanuel Macron focused on this topic:
Macron stated yesterday that among the main questions in the coming days are security guarantees for Ukraine and the mechanism for using frozen assets.
Action Plan
According to the journalist, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced during a speech in the European Parliament that the Commission has already prepared a legal basis to move in this direction:
So, the process is moving forward, but there is one nuance left — to convince Belgium, where a significant portion of these assets is stored. However, if leading European leaders and the European Commission have an agreed plan, then Belgium will likely agree if the decision is legally impeccable.
Controversial Proposals
It was also previously mentioned that one of the proposals in the new US 'peace plan' for Ukraine could complicate the use of frozen Russian assets to provide a loan of 140 billion euros to Kyiv.
Recall that the Kremlin deliberately published recordings of conversations between Trump's aides and Russians. This may indicate a division of opinions at the international level regarding further policy towards Russia and financial support for Ukraine.
