EU Declines to Set Accession Date for Ukraine, Despite Zelenskyy's Request.
Ukraine's Path to EU Membership
According to Novyny.live: As of February 15, 2023, the governments of the European Union member states are not prepared to name a specific date for Ukraine's accession to the bloc, despite a direct request from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. There is currently no unified position within the EU on this critical issue.
On February 14, 2023, President Zelenskyy emphasized that he requires a target date for Ukraine's EU membership as part of a broader set of security guarantees for his nation. This request comes as the US has outlined a 20-point peace plan suggesting a potential accession date of January 1, 2027. However, despite these markers of progress, many EU member states remain unwilling to commit to a concrete timeline. The accession process is complex and involves meeting numerous political and economic criteria.
Statements from European Leaders
Commenting on the situation, European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas noted:
“I have the feeling that member states are not ready to name a concrete date... There is still a lot of work ahead.” - Kaja Kallas
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs also confirmed that while there is a general understanding of Ukraine's future place in the European Union, he shared a similar assessment:
“When I talk to many heads of state, I get the impression that there is no readiness to accept a date.” - Edgars Rinkēvičs
Furthermore, Rinkēvičs observed: 'Will there be a peace agreement or not? I don't see Russia moving anywhere, and if Russia doesn't move, then we won't have an agreement.' These comments underscore the difficult geopolitical circumstances surrounding discussions on Ukraine's European integration, which are taking place against the backdrop of an ongoing war.
The topic of Ukraine's European integration and its potential EU membership remains highly pertinent. The lack of a clear accession date highlights the significant political and economic challenges facing both Ukraine and the EU itself. Future negotiations will likely depend on shifts in the regional security situation and Ukraine's progress on the internal reforms required to meet membership criteria. These factors will be decisive in shaping Ukraine's European future and its journey toward the Union.
