EU Demands End to Israel's Attacks on UN Forces in Lebanon.
The European Union expresses serious concern over the rising tensions on the Blue Line.
This statement was made by the EU High Representative Josep Borrell on behalf of the countries of the European Union.
The EU condemns all attacks on UN missions. It is particularly concerned about the attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which have resulted in injuries to peacekeepers. Such attacks are a gross violation of international law and unacceptable. These attacks must be stopped immediately.
It is noted that all parties must ensure the safety of UN personnel and property and respect the inviolability of UN buildings.
There is hope that the Israeli authorities will clarify the circumstances and thoroughly investigate the attacks on UNIFIL, which plays an important role in stabilizing Southern Lebanon. All parties are urged to fully comply with their obligations regarding the safety of UNIFIL personnel and allow it to continue fulfilling its duties.
It is noted that UNIFIL's troops and other personnel, which include EU member countries, are working under difficult conditions to ensure international peace and security.
The EU also expressed serious concern over the rocket attacks by Hezbollah on Israel and IDF strikes on populated areas in Lebanon, which have caused civilian casualties and displaced many people.
The EU calls for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and obliges all parties to fully comply with Security Council Resolution 1701.
