Mechanism to End Reliance on Russian Gas Launches

According to UATV: The European Union will formally initiate its plan to end dependence on Russian gas starting February 3, 2026. This strategy aims to achieve full energy independence from the Russian Federation by the year 2027. The move comes as part of a broader effort to bolster the bloc's energy security, which has been a major concern since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The mechanism will impose restrictions on Russian gas supplies, directly impacting the energy security of EU member states.

Staged Restrictions on Gas Supplies

Specifically, a ban on short-term contracts for both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas will take effect in April and June of 2026. From January 2027, long-term LNG deliveries will also be prohibited. A complete ban on all pipeline gas imports is scheduled for the end of September 2027, marking the final step in the total phase-out of Russian gas.

EU member states may extend these ban deadlines until October 2027 if their gas storage facilities are insufficiently filled. Consequently, by 2027, all Russian LNG and pipeline gas will cease to flow into the EU. The decision to implement the ban was supported by all EU member states except for Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria.

This planned phase-out reflects the EU's heightened concerns over energy security and dependence on Russian supplies, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The transition is expected to accelerate investment in renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions, aligning with broader European climate goals. However, implementing this plan will require significant effort from member states to ensure stable energy supplies and adequately fill storage facilities before the bans take full effect.
