European leaders want to meet with Trump before his negotiations with Putin: details.
European leaders plan to hold consultations with US President Donald Trump before his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. This initiative is aimed at coordinating positions ahead of possible negotiations with the Kremlin.
EU leaders plan to communicate with Trump as part of diplomatic contacts between American, Ukrainian, and European representatives. Preliminary talks have already taken place in the UK with the participation of US Vice President J.D. Vance and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. After that, the EU foreign ministers scheduled a meeting. According to Bloomberg, it is still unknown whether a phone call with European leaders will take place.
Moscow has proposed a condition for ending the war in Ukraine: the transfer of the eastern part of Donbas and Crimea to Russia. Trump has expressed the need to discuss this issue along with security guarantees for Ukraine. Ukraine and most European countries support a ceasefire and the establishment of a frontline for further negotiations.
Appeals from leaders to Trump and his response
The countries of the Nordic-Baltic Eight and the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called on Trump to consider Ukraine's interests in negotiations with Putin. Vance stated that the US will stop funding Ukraine's defense.
