Expert Warns of 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker Dangers

According to UATV: Expert Hennadii Riabtsev has raised the alarm over the dangers posed by a 'shadow fleet' of tankers used by Russia to transport oil, urging the US and European nations to implement stricter measures against such vessels. He warned that tankers operating outside international regulations present a severe threat to maritime safety, particularly in the Baltic and North Seas.

Risks and Regulatory Challenges

Fourteen European countries have already issued warnings about the risks associated with these tankers, which range from 270 to 300 meters in length. Riabtsev noted that the profits from transporting oil are so substantial that companies find it easy to purchase flags of convenience from 'banana republics,' highlighting the risks of lax oversight for these ships.

'If anyone thinks the sea is so vast that two objects cannot meet in the same spot, they should remember the Titanic,' Riabtsev remarked.

The expert further observed that the ocean's vastness is no guarantee of safety. These comments underscore the urgent need for stricter sanctions and control over tankers that threaten not only the environment but overall maritime security. This shadow fleet has grown significantly since 2022 as Russia seeks to circumvent Western sanctions on its energy exports.

Hennadii Riabtsev's statements reflect the international community's growing concern over maritime safety amid heightened geopolitical tensions. The dangerous practice of using poorly regulated tankers could have serious consequences for both the environment and the economic security of nations reliant on safe shipping lanes. The European response to these challenges may prove a critical step in strengthening maritime law and regional security.
