The Purpose of Platform Edge Lamps at Every Kyiv Metro Station.
Platform Edge Lamps in the Kyiv Metro
According to Novyny.live: Installed at the end of every platform, special lamps in the Kyiv subway system play a crucial role in passenger safety and operational efficiency. These lights help train drivers see passengers boarding through the last doors of the carriages, as well as any personal belongings they may have. This reduces the risk of injury and damage to personal items during boarding and alighting. Such safety features are increasingly common in major metro systems worldwide.
As train driver Dmytro Roda explained,
"This lamp helps the driver illuminate the last carriages to see how passengers are entering the final doors and any of their belongings, even those that extend beyond the normal clearance."This confirms the lamps' daily importance, ensuring not only passenger convenience but also safety during travel.
Metro Station Renaming
In a separate development, in May 2023, the Kyiv City Council decided to rename three metro stations:
- The station 'Druzhby Narodiv' was renamed to 'Zvirynetska'
- 'Ploshcha Lva Tolstoho' became 'Ploshcha Ukrainskykh Heroiv'
- 'Prospekt Pravdy' received the new name 'Varshavska'
These changes reflect the city's effort to adapt to contemporary requirements and the preferences of its residents. The renaming of public infrastructure is a significant process in many post-Soviet cities.
Therefore, both the platform edge lamps and the station name changes are important aspects of the Kyiv Metro's operation, contributing to enhanced safety and improved passenger service. The implementation of the lamps is part of a broader strategy to improve safety in public transport, which is becoming more relevant with growing passenger numbers. The station renamings also demonstrate an official drive to modernize and adapt infrastructure to the needs of modern society, which can positively impact the metro's public image.
