Kharkiv Mayor Calls for Century-Long Security Guarantees for Ukraine.
A Plea for Long-Term Security
According to Novyny.live: Ihor Terekhov, the Mayor of Kharkiv, has argued that Ukraine requires long-term security guarantees lasting at least a century. He expressed gratitude for the support from the United States, stating that Ukraine needs tangible security assurances that will yield dividends for peace. This call comes as Ukraine seeks to solidify its defense against future aggression following the full-scale invasion by Russia.
Terekhov, who also heads the Association of Frontline Cities and Communities, emphasized that Kharkiv's residents have lived under constant threat and shelling for the past four years.
"We need security guarantees not just for 2027 or the two years after, but for at least a hundred years," he stated.
A Symbol of Ukrainian Resilience
According to Terekhov, Kharkiv has become a symbol of Ukraine's resilience, having endured relentless bombardment and attacks throughout this period.
"Kharkiv is a fortress, and over these four years of war, it has been a barometer of Ukraine's endurance," he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also announced a series of upcoming international political meetings focused on the topic of security guarantees for the country. These diplomatic efforts highlight the ongoing struggle to secure Ukraine's future sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ihor Terekhov's statement reflects the pressing challenges Ukraine faces in the context of the ongoing war and its need for stable international security commitments. As a strategically vital city, Kharkiv remains on the front lines of the fight for peace and stability, underscoring its significance not only regionally but for the entire nation. The international meetings initiated by the Ukrainian president could represent a crucial step toward strengthening these guarantees and garnering sustained support from the global community.
