Alain Berse's Visit to Kyiv

According to Novyny.live: On February 16, Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berse arrived in Kyiv for a meeting with Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha. Their discussions centered on critical issues, including the situation on the battlefield and the state of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

The talks also addressed holding Russia accountable for its actions and strengthening Ukraine's institutional resilience. Minister Sybiha highlighted that

"The Council of Europe was the first international organization to terminate Russia's membership. That was a powerful decision."
He further stated that
"accountability for war crimes is a defining element of a just peace."

Sybiha also expressed hope for the continued development of relations between Ukraine and the Council of Europe, noting, "We are committed to further advancing the relationship between Ukraine and the Council of Europe." This high-level visit underscores the ongoing international focus on Ukraine's defense and stability. The Council of Europe, distinct from the EU, is Europe's leading human rights organization, making its support particularly significant.

Secretary General Berse's trip highlights the Council's active role in supporting Ukraine during a time of war and instability. Ukraine's firm stance on ensuring Russia faces consequences for war crimes is crucial for shaping the international response to the continuing aggression. Further steps in developing Ukraine's relationship with the Council of Europe could help strengthen the country's institutional foundations and safeguard human rights throughout the conflict.
